Life After Midlife: The Longevity Piece

Most of us don't have the money to follow Bryan Johnson's anti-aging protocol. The middle-aged tech centimillionaire and his team of scientists have been recording and measuring changes in the methylation process and telomere lengths in their attemp to reverse epigenetic age. These fancy words mean the scientists are trying to figure out how to live longer, healthier.

And that's the goal. We want our healthspan (the number of years we live in a state of health) to equal our lifespan (the number of year we live). We have to put the work in now so the last ten years isn't spent in ill-health. Is Bryan Johnson's anti-aging regime the only way to achieve this? Project Blueprint, as it is known as, includes about 100 supplements and day, a strict sleep schedule and a very specific diet. His goal is not to die. My goal, and what I want for you, is to create a regime that, over time, with consistent effort, will build the stamina and strength necessary to age well. We can not make our well-being someone elses responsibility.

The anti-aging protocol Bryan has designed will cost you big bucks. Developing your own longevity protocol with the science-backed hacks that we already know is enough to see dramatic results and you won't need to take 100 supplements a day. Slowly, one by one, we incorporate our new habits, and change, one day at a time. A prime example of a habit formed is brushing our teeth. I can't go to bed without brushing my teeth. It's automatic. Before you know it you will 1. look at the colours of the sunrise 2. journal, set your intentions, and write in your gratitude journal while having your coffee 3. do your stretches after you brush your teeth 4. stop eating bofore you're too full 5. swap out harsh cleaning products for friendlier ones 6. start eating colourful fruits and vegetables daily 7. do some push-ups and jump squats 8. practice time-restricted eating 9. make time to rest and relax 10. find a way to give back to the community. Every day, week and month ahead will provide opportunities for exercise, connection, laughter, joy, reflection, nature therapy, cooking at home, baths, and growth.

I want to encourage people to take responsibility for their health. Get your screening done; skin, breast, colon, and talk to your doctor, nurse practitioner, Naturopath, MT and osteopath. Talk to your friends, colleagues, and family. Remember that your journey is different, what your body needs is different from the next person. Start noticing where improvements can be made and start writing down the things you want to incorporte into you morning/evening rituals. If there have been significant mid-life changes and you're still doing business as usual my guess is your body's needs aren't being met. The focus is on oxytocin, not estrogen, food from the earth, not from a factory, time with friends, not time spent cleaning your house. Meditate, move your body, read, spend time with loved ones, and do what you love.

My approach and what I suggest...throw the kitchen sink at it! Do it all. Therapy, time-restricted eating, hormones, lift heavy, make time for exercise, eat nutrient-dense foods, plan fun things, find joy, and eat the ice-cream. We don't know what the future holds, but if you take full responsibility for your health now, you can slow down the aging process and create a future worth experiencing. Start now and move forward one day at a time.
